THE DOWNBEAT
Seconds before the downbeat
I glimpse those darkened faces
Who wonder if my imagination
Will lift them to a better place.
And now scrutiny’s light is on me
But I wish I could turn it on them
I always knew how to keep
my time
When
they can’t remember when.
Fast and furious I change my grooves
Hoping to unleash their heads
Instead their fantasy storms the stage
Surging with lust and spiteful greed.
As we play to please ourselves
We still promote their clap
and cheer
Maybe
if they give themselves a hand
They could smile throughout the year.
As the curtain falls on our latest show
We’ll be lit until tomorrow night
Again I pray that when the curtain rises
I see faces that are filled with light.
